Overview

The NJ Investigators is a non-profit volunteer group founded in 2004 which focuses on many different aspects of the state of New Jersey. We're not simply a "ghost hunting" group, but we often perform investigations of locations where paranormal activity has been reported. Some members of the group may or may not believe in ghosts or the paranormal, so we like to investigate with an open mind and allow the evidence to speak for itself. In fact, we generally frown upon paranormal societies which actively try to prove the existence of ghostly activity. We feel that if there is paranormal activity and we provide adequate evidence of such, we've done our job. Similarly, if we are able to disprove claims of the paranormal at any given location, we've also done our job. Essentially we aim to be as unbiased as humanly possible.

In addition to paranormal investigations, we often like to expose little-known locations which have important historical significance. Not surprisingly, we often find locations which offer both extensive historical value as well as supposed paranormal activity. I made it a point when founding the group to avoid limiting ourselves to one subject. Another area of interest is local anomalies which wouldn't be classified as historic or paranormal. An example of this is the subject matter frequently found in the magazine publication "Weird NJ". Local signs, oddities, or personalities are often documented by our group.

Skeptics in the Group

A skeptic could join the group if he or she has an interest in the subject even if they're not a believer. Rich, for example, is one of these people. Skeptics may also want to join the group if they want to help explain our findings in a scientific way. Of course, we don't always focus on paranormal investigations so there is always something for believers and skeptics alike.

Investigation Methods

For every investigation we like to take professional-quality photos of the location for promotional purposes as well as for the website. We usually do these during the day before we really begin the investigation. Our main purpose for performing these investigations is to document our findings, if any. We typically use a number of digital still cameras and one or two digital video cameras. Occasionally we use voice recorders when being given a tour of a location or if we anticipate that audio evidence will be present. Generally speaking the video cameras contain the audio we're interested in.

We then do what we do best: wait and observe. The more active the members are in an area with paranormal activity, the more evidence you are likely to miss. We aim to keep evidence contamination due to our members to a minimum.

Once the investigation is complete, we review all evidence with a couple members. If we do find something, it is Rich's job to take the video or photos and edit a copy to highlight what we believe to be the evidence. The evidence is then ready to be sent to other groups to be validated and posted on our website.
